Things I Didn’t Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now #022: Rewatching Old Cartoons From My Childhood
At my parents’ house are old VHS tapes still lying around of cartoons my brother and I used to watch and always like rewatching whenever we visit during the holidays. Included are such greats as Dino-Riders, M.A.S.K., Sky Commanders, Voltron, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and, saving the best for last, Denver, the Last Dinosaur (because it’s the easiest to make fun of while watching).
Things I Liked 10 Years Ago But Don’t Like Now #019: Siding with Brandy in “The Boy is Mine”
I’m shifting my allegiance over to Monica.
Things I Didn’t Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now #020: Folk Implosion’s “Natural One”
You want to know how I found out about this song?
Moby.
Moby was hosting some music video program on MTV late one night and, as many terrible musicians getting such a privilege will do, played music videos from bands that were all far better than the host. I guess this means Moby has done something good in my eyes.
But that’s not really the point I wanted to make about this song. The point is *puts on his best Smoove B impression and starts the track* ladies?
Things I Didn’t Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now #019: Galaxie 500
For whatever reason I had recently been thinking about what song had caused me to cry the most. I was able to remember specific singular instances where a song had done it (Hello, Weezer’s “Only in Dreams!”) but the one that had claimed the most tear-frags escaped me.
Then I remembered the closing track to Galaxie 500’s 1989 masterpiece On Fire*- their tasteful, delicate, but above all gut-wrenching cover of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity.” I’m getting dangerously close to being able to count on two hands the number of times I have cried to this song driving to/from Boston on Route 2 alone.
*back on vinyl again!
