Things I Liked 10 Years Ago But Don't Like Now...
Usually everytime I go home to visit my parents I’ll look through my closet for old clothes that might actually be worth wearing again. And everytime I realize there’s a reason all of these old clothes are still in the closet - the reason being they’re all 2 sizes larger than anything I wear today. Thankfully I came to my senses and spared people any future wardrobe choices...

This ice cream has existed for over 20 years as the “Ice Cream of the Future” and really begs the question: how much more future is left until it’s officially the “Ice Cream of the Present?”

At one point it was the the 2nd most viewed website in 1999. Can you still remember your first geocities url? I can’t.

It was something about radio edits, i.e. FCC clean tracks, and the “inherent” lameness of public radio that kept the radio dial on neither the left or right. Then college radio, freeform radio and good hip hop stations came along. Nowadays I look forward to driving out for lunch so I can listen to WJMN’s “Back in the Day Buffet.” And WFMU- good lord where I would...

Here was the exact argument I would’ve given anybody in 1999 that told me vinyl was a better, more engaging listening experience compared to compact discs or 128 kbps mp3s: “But can you play a record in the car? Game, set and match.  I believe that’s what you’d call a verbal trouncing, no?”

It first seems like a badge of man-honor.  Those first pathetic strands peaking out, catching their first glimpse of daylight. “Rejoice, friends! Grow and be merry! Be like Johnny Appleseed and bear me a happy trail!” Then, as things often do, it starts to get out of hand. The hairs suddenly decide being contained under a shirt isn’t enough. In an attempt to unite with...

I only remember having this once as young child at my grandparents’ house and vowing never to have it ever again. Then I went to college and had a sabich. You know what will never work without pita bread? A sabich.

So I worked as a cashier/bagger at Price Chopper one summer and I used to love getting to round up carts and bring them back into the store. This was solely because I would get the carts moving real fast and ride them around the parking lot (something I still do since I don’t want to grow up). However, there was this one day during the summer where they had hired a manager’s...

When you were a rebellious 16-year-old you probably weren’t caring too much if your Pepsi went on the hardwood floors or coffee table that you clearly hadn’t paid for.

This 350 pound defensive tackle was always a fan-favorite with me and my Wisconsin family back in the mid 90s. He was nicknamed the “Gravedigger” and loved hamburgers. How much did Mr. Gilbert Brown like hamburgers? So much that the local Wisconsin Burger King chains sold the “Gilbert Burger” in his honor. The contents of this monstrosity were as follows. …a...

This didn’t apply to everyone, but if you were already a nerd in high school it didn’t help your cool campaign by telling people you were in Boy Scouts. And even if you could get away with telling people, you certainly weren’t going to gain any points if they found out you were an Eagle Scout. And do you know why? It was not cool, dude. But now if I’ve fallen off a...

1999 not only marked the premiere of the first Star Wars prequel but also the year Lego started making Star Wars Legos.  I can’t even begin to count the number of times I had wanted Lego to do this while I was a little kid.  Now I had placed a vow on never getting Legos again a few years back as I was a teenager and, well, that’s when you’re supposed to be getting under a...

That picture is the senior year yearbook photo of my high school gym teacher in Michigan, Mr. Viitala*. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays (could not find his baseball card online unfortunately) back in the early 90s, didn’t pan out and then taught physical education in Michigan. During one memorable sex ed class we watched some miracle of childbirth video and it ended early. He...

Things I Didn't Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now...
So April 9th marked the 10 year anniversary of “Go” [!!OLD ALERT!!] being released in theaters and I remember not wanting to see the movie solely because I did not like the No Doubt song or music video to “New” used to promote the movie’s release. If there’s anything I can take away from rewatching this video it’s that 2009’s a good year to...

I had no beef with these guys until seven of them felt it was their duty to sting me and send me to the emergency room to possibly die from my then unknown allergy. I am now Thomas J.

Okay, clearly I wasn’t playing this game in 1999, but I would’ve taken a bullet for it then. And for what? Hours wasted to spend $25 grand for buying a nonexistent Vegasaurus? BULLSHIT.

Things I Liked 10 Years Ago But Don't Like Now...
The number of arguments I had with people in high school telling them why their band sucked because they weren’t a Platinum/Gold selling artist is absolutely shameful. The wake up call came when I purchased Deftones’ “White Pony” and kept looking at the weekly Billboard RIAA certifications assuming “this was going to be the week the album gets its much-deserved...

Things I Didn't Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now...
Imagine you’re 16 years old, in a packed car with friends driving to the county fair and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” comes on the car stereo. Everyone else in the car sings along to the entire song, including the quirky backing vocal tracks, from start to finish. And when the song is over you say, “That was a really cool song!  Who was that?” That’s what happens...
