Things I Didn’t Like 10 Years Ago But Like Now #013: Michael Jackson The trouble with being born in 1983 was that when I became aware of Michael Jackson, it wasn’t Michael Jackson, POP SUPERSTAR GENIUS- the man responsible for some of the best pop songs of all time. Instead it was Michael Jackson, crazy man. And I wish I hadn’t held that opinion for so long. I understood his contributions to music, but I didn’t care for the contributions personally. In the Fall of 2006 I attended CMJ and wound up crashing at the apartment of one of my radio DJ’s friends in Brooklyn. The whole idea of going to CMJ was to see as many amazing bands as possible. Instead, what I’ve always remembered most fondly was spending one of the mornings with the housemates nursing our hangovers and watching a bootleg DVD someone had made of every original, uncut Michael Jackson music video. I went from just respecting the man to admiring the genius that was Michael Jackson that morning. I went back home after CMJ with Off the Wall and Thriller on repeat the entire drive back. Le Roi de Pop est mort. Vive la musique de le Roi de Pop!
